Hite Creek Water Quality Treatment Center Expansion – Phase 1
CONTRACTOR: Strand Associates, Inc.
PROJECT OWNER: Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District
LOCATION: LOUISVILLE, KY
BUDGET: $ 11.1 MILLION
COMPLETION: 2016
The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) at Hite Creek needed to be expanded to meet the increasing wastewater demands on the Metro Louisville system. The Hite Creek WWTP additions were put in place to increase the facility’s treatment capacity to 9 million gallons of wastewater per day.
Cornerstone provided structural design, construction administration, and special inspection services for the Hite Creek expansion project. For the first phase of this project, two existing 50-foot-diameter final clarifiers were demolished, and in their place one new 102-foot-diameter x 26-foot-deep reinforced concrete final clarifier was designed and constructed. The clarifier was required to be designed to retain soil on the upper slope area that provides vehicular access. In addition, a cantilever maintenance walkway was designed to allow access to the clarifiers. A new chemical storage and feed building was also designed and constructed. The building was designed as a 1 ½ story building with reinforced block walls and a brick veneer. The roof framing was hollow core concrete planks. The foundation was designed as a shallow foundation system. The project also involved the design of a flow meter box, influent junction box, effluent Parshall flume, UV splitter box, and valve vault. Structural modifications were also necessary to the existing mixed liquor splitter box to accommodate the new final clarifier.
