Dare To Care Roof Renovation

Dare to Care planned to relocate their executive offices and the Innovation Center Kitchen to an existing pre-engineered metal framing building that was originally designed and used as a grocery store in the early ‘90s. In order to change the use of the building, new loads were needed at various locations throughout the building. Since the structure is a pre-engineered metal building, no extra load capacity can be assumed in the existing members. This meant that any change to the existing framing had to be reinforced if any new loads were to be added. A thorough analysis of the building was required as well as intricate detailing to ensure proper construction.

Cornerstone provided structural engineering design and construction administration services for the renovations of the new Dare to Care facility. A RISA model analysis was done to determine what reinforcing would be needed at each steel joist. The joist strengthening design required constant communication with the Mechanical Engineers in order to verify rooftop equipment placement and loads, creating an economic solution for the client so that only the joists that needed the extra capacity were modified.

In addition to the joist strengthening, 2 new overhead canopies were designed which included new foundations and structural steel framing. An operable wall was also added, so Cornerstone designed the framing members to support it. Other items included additional lintels in new CMU wall openings, recessed slabs to accommodate kitchen equipment, a new roof deck with framing for each roof opening for the rooftop equipment, and the review of any RFI’s that developed during construction.
