MFWQTC West Headworks Assessment and Design

The Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District required a structural assessment for the West Headworks Building, Conveyor Room, Dumpster Building, and Blower Building in the Morris Forman Water Quality Treatment Center. The West Headworks Building and Dumpster Building were built in 1955, and the Conveyor Room was later added connecting the two buildings. There was visible damage in both the concrete roof planks and brick veneer for all three of the buildings. The roof plank damage ranged from hairline cracks to concrete spalling of critical concrete sections. The brick veneer damage involved corroded wall ties and deflection and cracking of the brick face.  The stairs in the Blower Building basement were corroded and required replacement.

Cornerstone provided assessment and design services for the repair of the four buildings. The most significantly damaged concrete roof planks identified in the assessment were recommended to be removed and replaced with steel deck, designed by Cornerstone. The brick veneer was designed to be repaired using retrofit helical brick ties to prevent further deflection and tuckpointing to repair the existing mortar damage. In the Blower Building, replacement stairs were designed including replacing the CMU infill.  Cornerstone performed construction administration services and special inspections for the repairs.
