Seismic Retrofit Of Crescent Hill East Filter Building

The two sections of Louisville Water Company’s Crescent Hill East Filters Building (built in 1926 and 1955) were assessed and analyzed for the current seismic code. The building was found to be deficient and required the design of seismic retrofit and strengthening. The decision to strengthen with conventional methods or Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP) required an assessment of the existing facility. If a building is a good candidate for FRP strengthening, money can be saved and minimal disruption to the current facility occurs, allowing our clients to maintain the current use during construction.
Glass FRP along with helical wall times and an anchoring system were used to strengthen the exterior and interior load-bearing walls. Beams were strengthened in the Chemical Building and a structural steel landing support was added. Carbon FRP was used to repair and strengthen the beams in the exterior junction box. The entire building got strengthened for less than 10% of the overall Construction Cost.
