I-64 and Grinstead CSO Interceptor
CONTRACTOR: MAC Construction
PROJECT OWNER: Louisville and Jefferson County Metropolitan Sewer District
LOCATION: LOUISVILLE, KY
BUDGET: $ 9 MILLION
COMPLETION: ONGOING
The Integrated Overflow Abatement Plan is the Metropolitan Sewer District’s (MSD) long term plan to improve water quality in Beargrass Creek and the Ohio River within Jefferson County by controlling CSOs and eliminating SSOs from MSD’s system. One piece of the solution was a 4-mile-long tunnel that ran 260 feet below ground, with portions of the tunnel under the Ohio River. The tunnel’s storage capacity is approximately 55 million gallons. Structures like this provide additional time for the treatment plants to get caught up and greatly reduces the chances of an overflow. In order to accomplish this, multiple structures were needed to intercept the combined wastewater and stormwater and divert it to the tunnel during high rain events.
The I-64 and Grinstead CSO Interceptor structures were designed to collect and convey combined wastewater and stormwater during a large storm events and divert the flow into the Ohio River Tunnel. Cornerstone Engineering provided structural design, construction administration, and special inspection services for the interceptor structures located in and around Beargrass Creek near the I-64 and Grinstead intersection. The interceptor structures are composed of reinforced concrete and have large diameter openings for maintaining peak flow. The structures in the project are partially or fully buried beneath grade.
Cornerstone has an ongoing contract for Construction Administration and Special Inspections for this project. Special Inspection services include concrete and masonry inspection and reporting, which aids to ensure that the intent of the contract documents is implemented in the field.
