Markland Lock & Dam – Highway Girders Repairs Phase 2
PROJECT OWNER: US Army Corps of Engineers
LOCATION: GALLATIN COUNTY, KY
BUDGET: $ 370,000
COMPLETION: 2019
Cornerstone worked as Prime Contractor for this important project for the USACE Louisville District. Our team of Lead PM, Field PM, Safety/QC staff worked directly with the USACE field inspector and the Contracting Officer/PM.
Our scope included strengthening weakened prestressed bridge girders at Markland Dam using Carbon Fiber Technology, perform concrete repairs in spalled and deteriorated areas with corrosion control, replace affected safety fence, repair steel gate, and perform multiple concrete patch repairs on multiple girders in the bridge.
We rented a mobile scaffolding system and it used to access the girders from the top of the pavement and reach the bottom of the girders where prestressed tendons were corroded and compromised. Corrosion scales were removed, and spalled areas were repaired. The safety fence was procured and was installed on either side of the bridge after existing damaged portion of the fence was demolished and removed and disposed of safely.
Working at over 200 feet above the river and underside of the bridge posed safety risks every time staff worked on this project. Cornerstone enforced a strict safety plan in the site which included daily safety briefing among important safety measures including wearing proper PPEs. Also, we had to work in a restricted space while maintaining and directing traffic in the remaining lane in the important bridge that connects KY and Indiana at Warsaw, KY. This project was accomplished in a tight time timeline with no safety incidents.
